“How A Bear Dies” is the story about a backcountry butcher yearning for the respect of his community. He dreams of throwing a legendary dinner party where the main course will be prepared by him, butchered by him, and harvested from his woods using a bow he’s crafted himself.

The trouble is, he’s never hunted a day in his life.

And building a reliable bow is not as easy as it seems.

Versions of this story have been honoured by the 20th Annual NOWW Awards, the Oregon Writers Colony Awards, featured in Type A Media’s “Isolated Together” anthology, and supported by the Ontario Arts Council.

Born and raised in Algoma country, Jacob Maybe loves to get some mud on his boots and some dirt under his nails. His stories usually reflect his hands-on, playful nature, his love for his area’s natural beauty, and his abject fear of failing as a parent. A sunrise meeting with a Great Grey Owl changed his life. His published work includes a children’s picture book, an adult murder mystery, and a heap of award-winning short stories and poems. He usually writes his stories down, but loves a chance to take the stage.

Lana Perry has roots as a musician, a long-time passion for textile arts, and is now transitioning to the stage. Her distinctly northern voice is informed by decades of immersion in the worlds of hunting, shooting sports, and competitive archery. She aims to prod and play with gender expectations, and brings undeniable vibrancy to every role.
