NORTHERNERS’ CREATION UNIT 2023
PLAYWRIGHTS CABARET
OPENING NIGHT PLAYSMELTER 2023

MAY 11 8PM
SUDBURY THEATRE CENTRE, 170 Shaughnessy St, Greater Sudbury, ON P3E 3E7
TICKETS $15 At Door | Festival Pass (all events) $50

We are delighted to Open PlaySmelter 2023 with a Playwrights Cabaret featuring the artists of our inaugural Northerners’ Creation Unit. There will be plenty of food and as we hear – for the first time! – offerings of several new works all created by Northern ON artists:

Featured Artists and their work:

The Madonna-Whore Project by Jessie Bergeron (Timmins)
Part theatrical experiment, part social movement, The Madonna-Whore Project is about the sexual liberation of womxn and folks of marginalized genders. The Mother of Ceremony unabashedly shares stories of her own ever-evolving sexuality and invites the audience to share like stories. The audience is encouraged to bring their infants and toddlers with them to the experiment, and to nurse, pump, change diapers, etc., throughout the piece.

Reynolds by Samantha Buttery (Sudbury)
Baltimore, Maryland 1850, one year after the death of Edgar Allan Poe. Of all mysteries surrounding his death, the utterance of the name “Reynolds” is the one that has captivated the world, since to this day, no one knows who Poe was asking for. A provocative new mystery.

To Each Their Own by Eli Chilton (Moose Factory)
A strange underground small, sub-basement location where three men live and work on stationary motion machines. This scene establishes their character, their situation, and by extension, their dilemma.

Garson Girl and Her World by Lisa Colman-Brown (Sudbury)
In 1972 un-wed pregnant teen Alana, from Garson, arrives at Kitchener hospital for the
clandestine delivery of her baby. When comforting Nurse Winifred asks an anxious Alana to recall a time in the past when she was brave memories of her 11-year-old self’s Expo67 adventure begin to unfold.

Scatapella by Joël Giroux and Stephanie Charbonneau (Sudbury)
The Director welcomes the audience directly and sets the stage for Scatapella: a story following a band of puppets competing in a cutthroat jazz competition – The Jazzies.

Chain-Gang by Andrew Paulsen (Thunder Bay)
Chain-Gang revolves around the workers in a call center. Workplace or hellscape?

Itinerary by Avery McMillian (Sault Ste. Marie)
In the mud beside the railroad tracks, a woman finds her possessions discarded and a place at her own table at a dinner party for those travelling alone.

FUIL by Garrett M. Ryan (North Bay)
Structure in three acts and with the voices of three sons of Northern ON, Patrick, Johnny and Yitzhak tell their story. In Kabbalah, it is taught that three is the number of components of the human soul.

The Sibling Survival Guide by Karen Thistle (Sudbury)
How to survive life in a household where a brothers’ disabilities take centre stage.

In an icy tent behind the last McDonald’s before the highway going North, Frankie Green and his sister Eva drift through their bleak existences on the periphery of North Bay society. And the sudden appearance of the otherworldly William Beaumont isn’t helping either.

Director: Garrett M. Ryan
Actors: Megan Byrne, Matthew Cavo Ferrero, Robert Leitner

Most recently, Robert worked on and toured across Canada, visiting both Northern Ontario and Prince Edward Island to portray the titular character of Frankie Green in Garrett M. Ryan’s award winning original new play, “The Inevitable Frankie Green”. The show received multiple awards across the tour, bringing home the “IFF Patrons Pick of the Fringe”and the “IFF Artists Pick of the Fringe” at the Island Fringe Festival. As well, winning the “Outstanding Production” award at the On The Edge Fringe Festival. Robert will be continuing touring the show this upcoming summer and can’t wait to get back started on it.
Robert is very thankful for this opportunity to do a staged reading of “The Inevitable Frankie Green”. Enjoy the journey.

Lara Bradley – Playwright

Lara Bradley writes plays, thanks to the support of Pat the Dog and the wicked dramaturgy of Lisa O’Connell and Matthew Heiti. She has also collaborated with the talented Cait Hepner, Cora Eckert, and Rick Duthie (with Matt pulling it all together) on the recently produced #TheWatertower at the Sudbury Theatre Centre. A former Sudbury Star reporter, Lara’s day job is now in communications. She lives with her family – Peter, Sebastian and Quinn– in a little log cabin in Sudbury and is grateful for their encouragement and support. Blind Nickel Pig is about storytelling and inspired by sisters: her own sister Kari, her grandmother and great auntie, Loretta and Aileen, and two teenage sisters who broke out of the Sudbury Jail in the early 1900s (who may have been called Annie and Frannie).

ARTIST GATHERING: A CONVERSATION ABOUT MAKING ART IN NORTHERN ONTARIO

MAY 13 11am-2pm
SUDBURY THEATRE CENTRE, 170 Shaughnessy St, Greater Sudbury, ON P3E 3E7

Registration Required: Click here.
Event will be available live-in person + virtually via zoom.

Following the success of the virtual conversations begun in 2020 at the Together But Apart – Conference on Touring Theatre in Northern Ontario and continued throughout 2021-22 we are pleased to gather in-person for the first time during PlaySmelter 2023.

Our conversation continues to be an opportunity to bring both the emerging and existing theatre community together for conversation and collective brainstorming. This gathering offers the opportunity to hear inspiring success stories and participate in collaborative problem-solving. It’s a meeting place where everyone is welcome; a chance for us all to develop professionally and build new partnerships.

During the gathering we will be sharing an exciting new project that has been created as a result of the previous conversations and which will be piloted in 2024.

Theatre is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary art form. It is imperative that we have participation from those involved in other arts disciplines; we firmly believe that the more silos we can break down, the stronger we will all be. We welcome and invite everyone involved in the arts in Northern Ontario to attend: Presenters, producers, artists, curators, performers, creators, volunteers, venue staff – anyone who is interested in seeing more Northern Ontario stories shared in Northern Ontario communities.

Thanks goes to the Canadian Heritage for their continued support in delivering this event.

SUDBURY SATURGAY NIGHT BY ALEX TÉTREAULT

MAY 13 9PM
SUDBURY THEATRE CENTRE, 170 Shaughnessy St, Greater Sudbury, ON P3E 3E7
TICKETS $15 At Door | Festival Pass (all events) $50

A young queer kid enters Zigs, Sudbury’s gay bar, for the very first—and possibly final—time. Disillusioned with life in the crater, he dreams of taking off for greener and gayer pastures. Under the auspices of Sudbury’s divine protector, Sainte Poésie, a trio of the bar’s colourful fauna take him under their wings and invite him into their magical, eclectic, and absurd world. Will they be able to convince him to stay or will they lose him to the siren song of the big city?

Translated over the course of Pat the Dog’s inaugural Northerners’ Creation Unit, Sudbury Saturgay Night is an adaptation of Alex’s own project, Nickel City Fifs, which he’ll be coproducing with the Théâtre du Nouvel-Ontario (TNO) in June 2023.

Director: Garrett Carr
Translation: Alex Tétreault
Translation Dramaturge: Miriam Cusson
